The Manhattan Solid Waste Advisory Board is hosting a virtual screening of "The Sacrifice Zone: Life in an Industrial Wasteland” on December 16, 2020 from 4:00pm-7:00pm.
What happens when Manhattan residents throw their garbage away? In many cases, especially for the West Side of Manhattan, “away” is a huge incinerator in our neighbor city, Newark, New Jersey. The constant burning of toxic materials in that facility releases dangerous fumes that have dire health effects for the people living in its shadow, an area known as the Ironbound section.
The Manhattan Solid Waste Advisory Board (MSWAB) cordially invites you to an online screening of the "The Sacrifice Zone: Life in an Industrial Wasteland" a 30-minute documentary by filmmaker Julie Winokur that explores the struggle the Ironbound Community is currently engaged in against the now famous incinerator located in their backyard.
Following the screening, there will be a one-hour conversation: Just Transitions, with Maria Lopez-Nunez, Deputy Director of Advocacy and Organizing of the Ironbound Community Corporation (ICC) and Paul Casowitz of the law firm Sive, Paget & Riesel, who was involved in the City's planning for the shutdown of NYC’s gigantic Freshkills Landfill (2001) and the solutions around that shutdown. Many of these solutions are still in place. Among the topics in this discussion is how to craft thoughtful policy to fix this situation. The event is moderated by MSWAB Chair, Matt Civello.
