SUPPORTING GREEN THEATRE ADVOCATES ACROSS THE COUNTRY

WHAT IS A GREEN CAPTAIN?

A Green Captain is a green theatre advocate on Broadway, in their college theatre department, on their touring production, at their local venue, or anywhere else that theatre exists. Anyone from any department can be a Green Captain - the includes crew, performers, ushers, stage managers, designers, arts administrators, and more. Each Green Captain has the power to implement and encourage a wide range of environmentally friendlier practices. With the support of and resources from the Broadway Green Alliance community, they will help redefine the industry’s practices to be more sustainable.

 Broadway Green Captains

We reached 100% participation on Broadway during the 2011/12 season. Many Broadway Green Captains volunteer at the first rehearsal or soon afterwards. These green theatre advocates are then sent a welcome toolkit with information and resources on how to help their production become more sustainable. With support from the BGA, Broadway Green Captains have implemented countless sustainable practices and initiatives across the great bright way.

TOURING & VENUE (ROAD HOUSE) GREEN CAPTAINS

The Touring Green Captain program is designed to support members of any touring productions in their efforts to lessen the impact at each of their destination road houses. A Touring Green Captain is any member of the touring company who focuses on sustainable efforts for the tour itself. Venue Green Captains can be any representative from a road house who will collaborate with the Touring Green Captain when they arrive at their venue, as well as implement greener practices at the venue year-round.

 Regional Green CaptainS

The Regional Green Captain program is designed to support local theatre productions and venues outside of New York City to operate in a more environmentally conscious manner. Regional Green Captains can be from any type of production or venue (LORT, community theatre, SPT, etc.) and are encouraged to work directly with their Regional Green Alliance chapter where available.

  OFF-BROADWAY GREEN CAPTAINS

The BGA and the Off-Broadway League established the Off-Broadway Green Committee in 2013. The Off-Broadway Green Committee now includes Off-Off-Broadway and Independent Theatres as well.

The committee’s first initiative was the launch of an Off-Broadway Green Captain program. This ongoing activity quickly included more than 45 Off-Broadway Green Captains using our newly-revised Off-Broadway Green Captain Toolkit. The kit combines elements from our successful Broadway Green Captain Kit and additional resources for smaller theatres, with a dual focus on both venue greening and theatre company greening, including green hints for offices.

UNION, EVENT, & ORGANIZATION GREEN CAPTAINS

The Union, Event, and Organization Green Captain program is designed to support members of theatrical unions, events, and organizations in driving sustainable production practices forward.

 College Green CaptainS

Kiersten Bjork, College Green Captain (Fairfield University)

The Broadway Green Alliance hosts the College Green Captain Program to support students and faculty who are passionate about implementing sustainable production practices. Student and Faculty Green Captains are provided resources for greening collegiate theatre productions. Through this self-managed program, you will join a community that will help support you in making your college theatre experience more sustainable and prepare you to carry on those practices as you progress in your field.

Students in the College Green Captain Program are also eligible to apply for the BGA College Green Captain Award. The BGA College Green Captain Award is presented annually to a student Green Captains working at any level of academic theatre. The award honors students for exceptional work at the intersection of theatre and sustainability. Learn more about the BGA College Green Captain Award here.

How it Works

  • The first step for any interested Green Captain is to establish support within their department, which can be done before or after signing up below. At each school, there are two key Green Captains: Faculty and Student. There is no limit to the number of Green Captains, but there should be both in order to provide continuity, leadership, and institutional support for Student Green Captains over multiple years. It is important for both Faculty and Student Green Captains to connect directly with the BGA to be able to get the support they need.

  • Each Green Captain will receive a toolkit, complete with a list of suggested environmentally friendly practices that can be put into place immediately, most of which are implemented on Broadway. Other resources will also be shared based on the interests of the Green Captains.

  • As the semesters progress, Green Captains are encouraged to share green efforts and ideas with Broadway Green Captains, other College Green Captains, and our Off-Broadway and Regional Green Captains through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Keep us updated on social media or send us your photos and videos so we may elevate your impact!

  • Green Captains record ideas, progress, and other data in order to reflect on challenges, triumphs, and areas for future opportunity. Additionally, this is encouraged to be shared with the Broadway Green Alliance for additional amplification and a chance to win the annually-awarded BGA College Green Captain Award.

  • If your path moves you away from the program, please be in touch with the BGA to establish a succession plan to be sure green theatre advocates and initiatives remain the norm at your institution.
