As part of Fall Semester '21 Arts Platform course, PERFORMANCE IN THE AGE OF PANDEMIC, Maya Ciarrocchi will lead a conversation with performance artist Kris Grey. During the hour-long lecture, Grey will discuss their practice of using their body as raw material, often presenting themselves in states of extreme vulnerability as an invitation to experience transcendence or discover hidden queer histories.
In addition to their individual practice, Grey collaborates with Maya Ciarrocchi under the moniker Gender/Power. Gender/Power has been awarded a Baryshnikov Art Center residency, a Lower Manhattan Cultural Council residency, a Franklin Furnace grant and a MAP Fund Grant.
Grey’s writing, titled “Trans*feminism: fragmenting and re-reading the history of art through a trans* perspective,” was published by Manchester University Press in "Other-wise: Imagining Queer Feminist Art Histories."
Grey received a bachelor of fine art from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a master's degree in fine art from Ohio University. They perform, teach and exhibit work internationally. www.KristinGrey.com.
Organized by Maya Ciarrocchi.
This event is part of PERFORMANCE IN THE AGE OF PANDEMIC, a virtual, public-facing event series exploring the context of the radical reorganization of life under the current COVID-19 pandemic and other health crises such as the AIDS and 1918 influenza pandemics. Guest artists, curators, activists and scholars will consider how performing artists have responded to and been affected by these worldwide epidemics, the varied forms and functions of the work created during these times, and potential longer term changes that may result, while also making space to consider the state of arts presenting institutions and infrastructure in the wake of COVID-19. Hosted by faculty from the Department of the Arts at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts at The New School. All events are free and open to the public, but prior registration is required.
Zoom link will be sent in advance of the event.
