Call to Care: Protecting Flushing Creek through the Rights of Nature with Indigenous lawyer Chief Harry Wallace and environmental legal scholar Rebecca Bratspies

Organized and facilitated with Queens Museum's Year of Uncertainty cohort members Alex Stada + Tali KerenTecumseh Ceaser, and Guardians of Flushing Bay (GoFB), this program introduces frameworks for environmental protection through the tools and perspectives presented by legal practitioners and scholars Chief Harry Wallace and Rebecca Bratspies.

At this pivotal moment, where Takeroot Justice’s petition, filed in June 2020 to block the Special Flushing Waterfront District was dismissed, and next steps towards restoring and protecting the vital wetlands of Flushing Creek and oppose the displacement of communities in Flushing Queens are unclear, this program aims to explore new paths and tools towards protecting Flushing Creek that are rooted in rights of nature and indigenous thinking.
