In this hands-on workshop we will explore our relationship with the trees that shade our blocks and clean our air and explore local life-affirming ways in which we can collaborate with trees to fight the climate crisis and experience materials of care as makers and artists.
The workshop will start with giving participants a deeper understanding of the critical role the urban forest plays in city life, particularly through the lens of the climate crisis. This section will be followed by hands-on experience with caring for trees in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn.
After working with mulch, soil and water as materials of care, we will come to these materials through the lens of art, play and experimentation with creative games and art-making. We will explore how care enriches and expands the meaning of these materials for us as makers, and our experience as New Yorkers living in a city of trees.
Notes:
The workshop will take place outdoors in front of FiveMyles Gallery, 558 St Johns Pl, Brooklyn, NY 11238.
Tickets are free, but seats are limited and registration required.
In case of rain, the event will be moved to Sunday, November 14, 2021, at 11am-2pm.
Masks and social distancing required. Proof of vaccination needed.
